Ahmad Shah Massoud

Ahmad Shah Massoud (June 2, 1953 – September 9, 2001) was an Afghan military leader and politician who was the leading anti-Taliban commander. Known as the 'Lion of Panjshir,' he successfully defended the Panjshir Valley against multiple Soviet and Taliban offensives. He was assassinated by al-Qaeda on September 9, 2001, just two days before 9/11. He is celebrated as a national hero and his legacy continues through his son Ahmad Massoud.
